機械は多数の部品から構成され,その部品は要求される特性に応じて様々な材料から作製されています.現在,機械の高性能化,軽薄短小化が進められており,部品を構成する材料には極限とも言える性能が要求されています.当研究室では,このような社会的要求に応えるべく,金属材料を中心に,材料開発・材料評価に取り組んでいます.材料の特性は,その化学的な成分よりもむしろ,その微細組織によるところが大きいです.
当研究室では,様々な加工法を用いて従来材よりも優れた材料特性を有する新規材料の創出を試み,引張試験や疲労試験などの種々の材料試験を行うことでこれら材料の力学特性を評価し,また電子顕微鏡等を用いたこれら材料の組織観察を行うことで,新規材料の持つ力学的・機能的特性と組織との関連性の関係を実験的に明らかにすべく日々研究を行っています.実験的に得られた各種特性の発現機構を,力学,熱力学,速度論,転位論などを駆使して理論的に考察し,得られた知見をフィードバックし,さらなる新材料開発への設計指針として活用しています.

Machines are composed of a number of parts made of different materials depending on the properties required. The materials used to make these parts are required to have extreme performance. In our laboratory, we focus on the development and evaluation of materials, especially metallic materials, that respond to such societal demands. The properties of materials depend largely on their microstructures rather than their chemical composition.
We are trying to create new materials with better properties than conventional ones by using various processing methods, evaluating the mechanical properties through various material tests, and observing the microstructure through electron microscopes, etc. We are also experimenting on the relationship between the mechanical and functional properties of the new materials and the microstructure. We are also conducting research to experimentally clarify the relationship between the mechanical and functional properties of new materials and their microstructures by observing the microstructures of these materials using electron microscopes. The mechanisms of various properties obtained experimentally are discussed theoretically using mechanics, thermodynamics, kinetics, dislocation theory, etc., and the obtained knowledge is fed back into a design guideline for further development of new materials.
